With these cards students can practice subitizing. Subitizing is quickly seeing and being able to say how many without counting. Subitizing is one of the foundations of arithmetic. At first students subitize perceptually. Next students subitize conceptually. This is where students begin to say how they see it.  They might say, “I see 2 and 2 and that makes 4.” Teachers should practice subitizing at least 3 times or more a week. Teachers need a subitizing toolkit that includes dot cards, ten frames, dominos and dice.

Teachers can ask a variety of questions such as:

  • What do you see?

  • How do you see it?

  • What would be 1 more?

  • What would be 1 less?

  • Show me that amount on your fingers.

  • Write the number on your white board.

  • How many more to 10
